The stepper motor used in this example is just a PC CD-ROM (or DVD-ROM) drive which has 4 wires. Proteus simulation of the example is provided at the end of the topic. Basically there are two types of stepper motors: bipolar and unipolar. The bipolar stepper motor is a two-phase brushless motor which has two coils (windings), this motor has 4.

  1. Stepper motors will work (our slightly under-powered setup cost about $100), but we decided to use the Pololu JRK 21v3 motor controllers ($50), with motors like the Lynxmotion GHM-16 ($22) - you can get those elsewhere - they are 12v 200RPM gearhead motors with 6mm shafts (nicely close to the 1/4' shafts we are using).

Description

The XYRB™ series uses stiff crossed roller mechanical ways for support and smooth motion. Precision ground preloaded ball screws allow higher speeds and better accuracy compared to lead screw driven motion products. A specialized monolithic center couples the upper and lower axes of the ball screw stage making the stage stiff and compact. Both motors are mounted to the center section, and move with the lower axis. Servo motors and linear encoders can be added for more precise positioning and accurate feedback for the highest repeatability and accuracy.

Applications for an XY Table

The repeatable performance of the XYRB™ precision XY table makes it ideal for life science and diagnostic instruments that perform automated imaging of a slide or flow cell. Compared to a stacked lead screw stage architecture, the monolithic design and ball screw provide more accurate and repeatable positioning within a smaller height package.

Networked - I/ O, RS-485 / Modbus (RTU) and Factory Automation Conveyor Applications

X-y Table Stepper Motor

Oriental Motor offers Network products under the FLEX concept, meaning each product is equipped with an interface that connects to various master controllers featuring I/O, RS-485 / Modbus (RTU) or Factory Automation. Networked products enable operating data and parameters for each motor to be set at a Master Controller and sent to each driver. In addition, operation commands can be input send set using various communication methods to meet the need of a wide range of available Network Solutions.

Available Network Solutions

1. I/O - Allows the driver to be connected directly to a controller or PLC to configure the operating system with I/O.

2. RS-485 / Modbus (RTU) - Operating data and parameters can be set and operation commands can be input using RS-485 communication. Up to 31 drivers can be connected to each serial communication module. Also there is a function that enables the simultaneous start of multiple axes. The protocol supports Modbus (RTU), enable connection with devices such as a touch screen (HMI) or PCs.

3. Factory Automation Network - Use of a network converter (sold separately) enables support with CC-Link, MECHATROLINK or EtherCAT communication. Operating data and parameters can be set and operation commands can be input using various communication methods.

For Connecting to Factory Automation (FA) Networks

The communication protocol of the master controller, Factory Automation (FA) network, is converted to Oriental Motor's own RS-485 communication protocol. Connection to FLEX-compatible products is completed with one RS-485 communication cable.
